Starting Small

Hey everyone!

I hope you are all doing well. Today, I wanted to take a moment and share the importance of being content with where you’re at in life. This isn’t my typical post, but I was inspired to write a blog post on this topic after reading my morning devotional. Everyone has a goal, a journey, or a dream about something they want to achieve in their lifetime. It can be big or small. However, the tricky part about having dreams and goals is they aren’t necessarily easy to attain. Success doesn’t happen overnight. You’ve got to put in the work to see results.

As a teenager, I used to dream about moving to New York City to study music. I had it all mapped out. However, as Senior year approached, I felt a lot of pressure to get a degree in something that paid well. Doubts crept into my head, so I decided I’d wait a year before going off to school. While I appreciated the extra time to think about what I wanted to do, it led me to do the awful thing known as the comparison trap. I’d hear stories about what others were doing and wonder where things had gone wrong for me. Social media didn’t help matters. It just fueled my toxic thoughts.

It wasn’t until my mid-twenties that I realized everyone’s journey is different. Growing up, society teaches us to do well in school, go to college, get a good-paying job, get married, have kids, etc. It’s like we’re all on some kind of timeline that says we need to do all of these things in this order by a specific date. That’s not reality, though. Life is unexpected. No matter how much we plan, we are ultimately not in control. However, the good news is that God is. And he has a plan for your life and mine.

When I decided I wanted to start this blog, I knew I wanted it to grow. Ideally, I knew I wanted to be able to possibly make a career out of it. I had made up my mind to do it, but once again, I fell into the comparison trap and wondered how I would achieve the success others had with their blogs. On this night, in particular, I remember feeling defeated. Overwhelmed. After all, I still have a regular 9 to 5 job to attend to also. I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage them both and successfully nonetheless. I picked up my devotional to read since I hadn’t found the time to do it in the morning, and it was then that God spoke to me. The title of that day’s devotional was “Starting Small.” I started to read and was overcome with emotion. Great victories usually have small beginnings. That was the first sentence I read. Alright, God, you got my attention. What else?

You may be praying that God will give you your own business, but God will direct you to start small—show up for work on time and be faithful at the job you have now.

That part hit me hard. However, it made me realize that I need to be content with where I’m at in life at this exact moment. As humans, we have a tendency to get caught up with future plans that we forget about the present. To get to our destination, we need to start our journey. We need to start small and let God lead us the rest of the way. His plan is far better than the plans we have for ourselves. Trust his timing and enjoy the journey. And with that, I’d like to leave you with a quote that I found very fitting for this post.

“Sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination”-Drake

I hope you all enjoyed this post. Please let me know in the comments what are some of your goals/dreams for the future?

Love, Brandi
