Life With Lyla: Two-Year Update

Hello everyone!

How are you guys doing? Please drop a comment below and let me know. I’m ecstatic that Fall is officially here! This morning felt glorious and I can’t wait for more crisp Fall days! Today, I’m finally getting around to sharing Lyla’s two-year update! It’s still mind-boggling that I have a two-year-old. Where has the time gone? Anyway, I’ve got lots to share with you guys so let’s get started!

I feel like I say this in every update, but Lyla’s personality is starting to shine! Our strong-willed girl is sassy, sensitive, smart as a whip, a great negotiator, and incredibly funny! She’s gone from saying a few words to full sentences! Every day, it seems as if she’s learned a new word and it just blows my mind how one day they go from saying “mama” to “mama, please stop. I need my space”. For those wondering, yes, she did say that! Haha!

Last year she was starting to walk and this year she is running to keep up with the bigger kids in our neighborhood. She now uses her fork/spoon for meals about 80% of the time and can drink from a cup with little to no spills. She has learned to say “no” and “yes” compared to shaking her head and nodding. She has moved up in classes at her daycare and is now in the Teddy Bear room with other preschoolers. We have the BEST daycare! I feel like she has learned so much being there. Around 18 months, she was determined to start potty training with the older kids at daycare. I’m happy to report that she’s been doing amazing with that! She’s had minimal accidents and has learned to tell us when she needs to go.

She’s been to her first dental checkup and we were told she has beautiful baby teeth! Unfortunately, she did chip her two front teeth during water play at daycare, but thankfully there was no nerve damage, and there shouldn’t be any issues with her permanent teeth. Most recently, we have said goodbye to the binky for good. It was emotional to see her so upset, but it needed to happen. We’ve noticed more tantrums/meltdowns, but that’s expected at this phase of life, so we are doing our best to help her learn how to regulate her emotions. We also transitioned her from her crib to a toddler bed. This is one area we are still working with her on. She is scared of the dark and has been sleeping in our bed. We’ve tried staying with her until she falls asleep and night lights, but neither has helped much. So, if anyone has any other ideas, send them our way!

Some things she’s currently interested in are singing (she LOVES this and sings multiple nursery rhymes a day), shoes, reading, her Little People toys, playing outdoors, and going to the zoo! Her favorite TV shows are Mickey’s Clubhouse, Cocomelon, Baby Shark, and Bebefinn. She loves helping mom and dad with chores and will recite prayer with us at every meal. She knows her colors, can count, and sings her ABCs. Last year we dressed her up as Barbie for Halloween and she also had her first Christmas program. She is still very much a mama’s girl, but we are slowly starting to see her come out of her shell.

Now you guys know I can’t leave you without a funny story. So, one night Kent, Lyla, and I were sitting at dinner. Kent gets up from the table and burps. He doesn’t say anything and after a few seconds of silence, Lyla speaks up and says “Excuse you, dada!”. It had both Kent and me rolling with laughter. Leave it to Lyla to teach Daddy some manners. Anyway, that is all that I have for you guys.

Thank you so much for reading!

Love, Brandi
