Landscaping Beginner’s Guide

Landscaping.png

Hey friends!

How are you all doing? I can't believe we are already in August! It feels like the Summer has flown by! Our nieces and nephew will be starting school again in the next couple of weeks. It always feels like they begin earlier every year. I remember as a kid starting in late August and getting out usually around the last week of May or early June. When does school start where you guys live? Let me know in the comments below!

Today, we are talking about all things landscaping! Some of you might know that Kent used to work in landscaping. In that job, he learned all sorts of tips/tricks. As first-time home buyers, landscaping chores can be kind of daunting. And if you're anything like me, I didn’t grow up in a house. We always lived in either a townhome or an apartment. So landscaping wasn’t something I had to worry about. However, being a homeowner, I’ve learned a lot, and while I am no expert, I thought it would be fun to share a beginner’s guide for those who don’t know where to begin. Shoutout to Kent for helping me compile these tips! :)

  1. Water your yard regularly — I know this might be a no-brainer, but you’d be amazed at how often your yard needs it! Just last week we experienced a couple of scorchers, and it did a number on our lawn. Thankfully, we got some rain, so it bounced back. However, it’s important to make sure you are watering a decent amount each week.

  2. Pull weeds — Again, this might be another no-brainer, but it is a key tip in maintaining your lawn. I’ll admit sometimes, I’m not entirely sure what I’m looking for. Kent’s advice is to look for anything that's out of place. If it stands out or doesn’t look right, you should probably pull it.

  3. Buy plants that coordinate with the colors of your home — This is a tip I have to give Kent credit. He is excellent about doing this! When we went shopping for flowers this year, he made it a point to help me find flowers in colors that would complement the siding of our house. I know it might seem a little extra, but it does make a difference and makes your house pop with the right colors :)

  4. Mow in different directions — One way to help your grass grow is to mow in different directions. If you don’t switch it up, it can cause the grass to lean one way. It can also cause ruts on the lawn. Therefore, you'll want to switch it up each time you mow (Bonus Tip: Get your blades sharpened at least once a year to help keep your yard looking healthy).

  5. Aerate your soil — Aerating your lawn helps allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the grassroots. In turn, this will help create a stronger, healthier, and vigorous lawn. Kent has done this for the last two years, and it does make quite the difference!

If you’re new to landscaping or just curious about how we keep our yard looking healthy, I hope these tips helped you in some way, shape, or form. Home is our happy place. Kent and I take great pride in not only making the inside look pleasing but also the outside. Comment below if you have any other tips or advice you’d like to share! We love hearing what others do to their homes :)

Thanks for reading.

Love, Brandi
